DIY Packing Tips

Moving can be one of life's biggest stresses. Plan early to ensure your move is as painless as possible.

ORDER YOUR PACKING SUPPLIES

You don't need to leave everything to the day before the move - consider what can be packed now. Make sure you order the right quantities. Refer to the checklist below or alternatively call us for a guide on appropriate quantities for your needs.

PACK ONE ROOM AT A TIME

Label each carton with a description of its contents and its destination (ie. kitchen, bathroom). Be as specific as you can, it will make unpacking that much easier.

TAPE THE BOTTOM/TOP OF THE CARTON

Do not interlock flaps. Take extra care to make sure the bottoms of all cartons are secured and will hold the weight of the contents. We recommend two thicknesses of packing tape. Also make sure to seal the top with tape to prevent damage and make storage easier.

SELECT THE RIGHT CARTON FOR THE RIGHT JOB

For heavy items like books, wine and tinned food use small cartons such as book cartons. Some items like large pictures, mirrors, plasma screens, mattresses etc may require special cartons or wrapping - which we can provide.

ALWAYS PACK HEAVIER ITEMS TOWARD THE BOTTOM

Pack heavy items toward the bottom of the carton and lighter items toward the top. Make sure to line the bottom of the carton with padding (ie. packing paper, towels, linen).

BREAKABLE ITEMS SHOULD BE WRAPPED INDIVUDUALLY

Wrap these items in butchers paper. When packing glassware and/or china, make sure there is sufficient padding. A good rule of thumb is to have 2/3 china with 1/3 padding.

CORRECTLY FILL CARTONS

Do not overfill cartons. Keep in mind that the final weight of the carton should not exceed average adult strength (ie. a good weight is around 23kg). A small space at the top of the carton can be filled with paper, towels or blankets.
